An outline of the orientation process and what is involved

Orientation is an important event that starts your journey as a university student. Whether we are online or on campus this is your chance to learn how things work at the university, familiarise yourself with your course requirements and meet other students as well as faculty and staff members.

We will provide you with important information related to your enrolment, important timelines and dates[ e.g. Census date] , reminders of your visa obligations, your rights and avenues for seeking advice and assistance and of course there will be lots of useful information and tips to assist you settling into Australia and to your new home city.

Orientation social events are a great opportunity for you to meet other students and engage with your campus.

Orientation is delivered the week before teaching starts so you have time to prepare and be completely organised and ready for when teaching starts in week 1.

We will also present helpful sessions that provide you with essential tools to succeed in your degree.

Orientation is your key to a smooth transition to your studies and an important step in setting you up with the best opportunity to feel excited, prepared and organised for your studies.

How do I prepare for orientation?

1. 1. Please ensure that you register for Orientation as soon as you receive the email requesting you to do so.
   2. Orientation will be held on campus for all students.
   3. Make sure you keep this day free. Consider this Day 1 in your university calendar. You will need to be present and focused for the day. Do not schedule other activities or arrangements. Set this day aside as the first step of preparation for your university journey – take it seriously.

During Orientation, presenters will take you through a lot of information – but don’t worry, there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, to have information repeated or to clarify your understanding.

An introduction to the systems you will need to access

Here is an introductory list of essential systems that you will need to access after orientation.

We will take you through each of these systems and explain how you log in to these during the orientation sessions.

1. My Enrolment: *My Enrolment is the web service that allows you to self-manage your studies, including grades, fees and more. (*Please note: This link will not work until you are enrolled)
2. MySCU: This is your portal to all University systems including your Blackboard Learning Sites, SCU Email, Library Services and much more.Access to MySCU is available once you are enrolled.
3. SCU email: It is vital to check this daily as you will be given important information that affects your studies.
4. SCU Blackboard: All the units you are enrolled in will appear in your BB site within 24 hours after you have been enrolled in these. You can access your Blackboard through MySCU. This Learning Site is where your Lecturer will provide you with information regarding your studies including assessments, unit guides, readings list and more. Please note if you do not see your Learning Sites by the commencement of the study period you may not be enrolled correctly. Enrolment - How will I know I am enrolled?

Here is what you need to know:

Step 1: Accepted your offer to study
Step 2: Registered for your orientation day
Step 3: You will be enrolled into your term units by the Program Coordinators
on your campus of study.
Step 4: Attend your orientation day. You will already be enrolled in your units when you attend orientation. On this day you will check your Studyplan and enrolment, check your access to the University systems, My Enrolment, MySCU, SCU email and SCU Blackboard.
Step 5: Start your studies, Week 1, Monday 10 March

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PART TIME WORK:

You should be aware of your student visa conditions. One of the important conditions is in relation to work.

New international students who have not held a previous student visa are NOT permitted to start work in Australia until their course commences. Your course commencement date is the date mentioned on your CoE. Commencing work before this date is a breach of condition 8105 of your student visa. We suggest that you read the post below for more details on visa condition 8105.

Instructions on how to access your online classes and tutorials

Instructions on how to join the online classes are provided to you in your SCU email after Orientation when enrolment is confirmed.

*Non student visa holders have the option to attend their tutorials online. Please note though that you are still enrolled with your Sydney/Melbourne/Perth campus. You are NOT enrolled as an online student.

Student visa holders must attend all tutorials on campus.
